How Google’s AI Overview (AIO) Will Impact Your Brand

August 1, 2024 Blog, Marketing, Thoughts

Open AI announced last week that they will be launching Search GPT, which is their artificial intelligence (A.I) powered search engine.

Search GPT will use A.I to create conversational search with information pulled from their databases and the internet.

Search GPT currently has a waiting list but is positioned to have explosive growth once it is available to use. This is because ChatGPT was the fastest growing application surpassing TikTok and other platforms in terms of growth and adoption.

According to Backlinko:

  • ChatGPT hasĀ 200 millionĀ monthly active users worldwide.
  • 77.2 millionĀ people use ChatGPT in the US alone.

Search GPT will more than likely be distributed to the ChatGPT users as well as the general public boosting growth and adoption right away. Searches for Search GPT trended higher on Google Trends than AI Overviews if you compare trend volumes when each was announced.

This means there is a lot of excitement for this new search engine.

Open AI took a different approach when building Search GPT than Google did with AI Overviews and their search engine in general.

Open AI worked directly with publishers to build the best product that will benefit searchers, Open AI and publishers. This is the exact opposite approach to what Google did, which was pull from the internet regardless if the answers were factual or not.

This resulted in AI Overview telling people to put glue on their pizza and that geologists recommend eating one rock a day to keep the doctor away.

This lead to backlash, apologizes and fantastic memes trolling Google.

The Verge reports that Open AI says, ā€œPublishers will have a way to ā€œmanage how they appear in OpenAI search features and they can opt out of having their content used to train OpenAIā€™s models and still be surfaced in search.

Googleā€™s AI Overview takes traffic from brands but it seems like Search GPT is being built to give quick factual answers as well as promptly citing and linking to their sources to drive traffic to them.

Here are two Search GPT ranking recommendations:

1ļøāƒ£ Allow ChatGPT: Update your website Robots.txt files to allow the following bots. OAI-SearchBot for search, ChatGPT-User and GPTBot
2ļøāƒ£ Content: If you donā€™t have the content that answers the questions then you canā€™t rank. Make sure your Content Strategy is focused on revenue driving and other high intent terms.
